CC2538DK: CC2538DK Quickstart guide in Z-Stack 3.0 Sample Application User's Guide does not work

I'm new to Zigbee and I'm using the SmartRF06 Evaluation Board with the cc2538 EM. I've built the sample projects SampleLight and SampleSwitch from ZStack 3.0.0 without problem. I flash a coordinator light to one board and an end device switch to the other board as per the guide. The menu seems to function nominally when I go to commission the network on the coordinator which counts down from 180. When I commision the end device the devices communicate back and forth as viewed form the packet sniffer. The commision screen displays "NS" and "NotOnNwk" disappears but nothing else happens. The field "Id000 Srch 000/00" remains unchanged on the End Device while the Coordinator Id field counts down to 000.

I'm new to this so not having a working example is proving difficult. Any help is appreciated.

It seems that you don't setup coordinator correctly. You can follow steps in Chapter 7 Quick Start Guide of Z-Stack Home Sample Application User's Guide.

Hi Colin,

It seems that something is going wrong with the NV memory of your devices. Erase them completely by clicking on IAR Project->Download->Erase Memory, do this for both devices and download the applications again.

Try to use a clean application without any change as a sanity check.

I've followed the quickstart guide again, this time erasing the flash prior to downloading it. I get the same results. Note that the guide is for the 8051 device and I am using ARM, but it seems to work normally. Can you point me to the documentation that defines the packet contents and binding negotiation?

I have not made any alterations to the projects.

I've followed the quick start guide and followed advice of another user to wipe the flash completely before programming. I sent him the OTA capture of the devices interacting. The two devices still will not maintain a connection or send application data. Are there different versions of the chip? The markings on mine are CC2538SF53 TI 381 AKLL G4. I have not altered the code in any way.

Do there exist known good binary images that can be downloaded to see if there is an issue with the hardware? I don't really have a starting point to try and debug this.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Colin,

Try this images, I just flashed my boards with this images using StartRF Flash Programer 2 and they work smoothly. Try them a tell me if works for you.

Light is a Router and the Switch is a Coordinator (I used a fresh Z3 stack for this images).

I flashed the .hex images you gave me. Still no luck.

When I commission the coordinator, it has the following screen:

FB FORM Openxxx

Id000 Srchxxx/00

where "xxx" counts down from 180.

While that is happening, I commission the router and it does the following:

1st screen:

NS NotOnNwk

Id000 Srch000/00

2nd screen (shortly thereafter):

NS CLOSED

Id000 Srch000/00

After about 20 seconds it returns to the opening menu. The APP MENU does not control the light during that time.

Appreciate the help. Any ideas?

Are you sure your coordinator and router use the same channel?

Hi Colin,

The .hex files that Jose posted work fine on my SmartRF06 + CC2538EMs. Have you tried using different stack versions to see if you have issues as well? It sounds like you are having hardware problems.

Any idea where to find an older stack? The version of the SmartRF06EB and CC2538EM are both 1.2.

I tried the older stack. Similar results as before. The end device sees the PAN and is assigned an address, but doesn't control the light. The devices are obviously talking to each other, but they don't seem to link up. Where can I find the documentation on the transaction between the devices including the breakdown of the data packets? Maybe I can debug the problem that way.

P.S. When the devices are put in EZMode, the coordinator responds with Success, but the End device still will not control the light.

It seems that you can form a Zigbee network and make a device to join. If EZ-mode responds success, I see no reason why your SampleSwitch cannot control SampleLight. I suggest you to use Ubiqua Packet Analyzer to check what happens.

I have TI's SmartRF packet sniffer. What I can't seem to find is discussion of how Z-Stack negotiates the network in order to determine how this differs from what my hardware is doing. Is this information best found in the IEEE standard or is there an easier source? Also, does ZStack comply with the standard completely or can I expect some surprises?

Can you do the sniffer log and attach it? Device association, binding, and EZ-mode are all defined in Zigbee spec so I suggest you to read spec first.

I'm running on a CC2538. I've been looking at the zigbee spec but haven't had much time to work on it. Will update when I've had a more time to investigate.
