Hi guys,

I am trying to configure as CC2530 EM as End Device. I don't know how to bind an end device to the coordinator or router. I need to know both. I need to do communication between them ( Router vs End device & Coordinator vs End device ) using AF_DATA_REQUEST or other commands. I did communication between Coordinator and Router using Z-Tool with two CC2530 EMs. Please help how to configure a cc2530 as End device and how to bind it to a Router or Coordinator.

Hi,
I did myself the communication between 2 CC2530s as COO and End device, I have doubt, is the device is always sleepy?, if not how can I change it to a sleepy one, and how does it wake from sleep?

If you configure device as end device type and enable POWER_SAVING, it will go to sleeping mode automatically when there’s nothing to do in osal task queue and wakes up periodically to polling for data. The wake up period is defined by POLL_RATE in f8wconfig.cfg

Can you tell me how to bind an end device to its parent?, I have configured the cc2530 using Z_TOOL as end device by writing SYS_OSAL_NV_WRITE, set the channel using APP_CNF_BDB_SET_CHANNEL then started commissioning using APP_CNF_BDB_START_COMMISSIONING. After start commissioning the device is connected to my coordinator(ETRX357-LR). I can see the CC2530 as sleepy end device (SED) in the Telegesis terminal.
I can send text messages between them. Do I need to bind the end device to COO now using ZDO_END_DEVICE_BIND_REQ?. I am using the Z-stack 3.0.1

Is binding is necessary?, I have connected the end device(cc2530 mdule) to COO(ETRX357 module) using Z tool. Also my end device is not automatically connecting to COO after power down and power up. Can you tell me how to do to that?

If you know destination short address and endpoint to deliver message, binding isn’t necessary. If you enable NV_RESTORE in CC2530 Z-Stack, it should connect back to coordinator automatically.

Yes I already enable the NV_RESTORE in preprocessor settings. The end device is not connecting though, I know the dest short address and end point of the end device and I could send messages that is not the problem, My end device is not reconnecting after power down and power on also it is not sleeping, I did as in this pdf www.ti.com/.../swra292.pdf but I am getting 90mv idle voltage, it must not give idle 90mV as you know.

Do you use sniffer to check what happens over the air when you do power cycle to CC2530 end device? Does it keep sending beacon requests?

I don't know how to setup sniffer, First I need to make it sleep, why it is not sleeping, I enabled power saving in the preprocessor setting and DRFD_RCVC_ALWAYS_ON is FALSE.

Ok, Can you tell me how to configure the CC2530 as end device using Z-TOOL by giving commands manually (I mean without script), that'll be so useful to me. The COO and router can be created by using this link . I need to know I am doing correct configuration.

Write ZCD_NV_LOGICAL_TYPE to 2 which means End device.

Oh thank you, I did the same. I did the sample application: light switch and light. The switch is COO and light is End dev, the poll rate is 7.5s. I got 5mA minimum curren. The minimum current is supposed to be around 1uA right?, The power saving is enabled in the sample light project. I am lossing lot of time by doing this.

which means?, I am using smartrf05 board for COO and smartrf05 battery board for end device for testing purpose. After this I am going to flash znp for CC2530 and then try to use other microcontroller to send commands to cc2530.

When you measure power consumption, do you measure it with SmartRF05? If so, can you show me how you measure it?

I am measuring the current using energy trace in code composer studio. The voltage is taken from msp432p401r lauchpad. I am attaching picture of the setup and the measurement.

If you have LED turned on on SmartRF05BB, it’s normal to see 5mA power consumption.

If you try to use SampleLight as coordinator and SampleSwitch as ZED to do the power measurement, do you still see 5mA?

I know this and that's why I suggest you to do the test to use SampleLight as ZC and SampleSwitch as ZED.

I got 5mA when the vcc and gnd is directly connected to CC2530EM board, I am using COO as light and ZED as switch now and I got 21mA minimum current when measured using the battery board, Is there any changes I have to made in the code or preprocessor settings for my needs?. There is a red LED, LED4 is always on. Is that the problem I am getting this much current. How to turn off this LED?

Do you have two SmartRF05EBs? Please use SmartRF05EB to do the test instead of SmartRF05BB.

Yes I have two smartrf05 boards, and I tested power measurements as you said. COO as light and ZED as switch. But there is no decrease in the currnet. I got 28mA now. Can I use UTIL_LED_CONTROL in ZTOOL to turn off LEDs. I used it but it seems not working

How do you measure the power consumption from SmartRF05? Do you use the jumper in 6.12 Current Measurement Jumper of www.ti.com/.../swru210a.pdf ?

I was using enrgytrace technology, Ok I measured the current from the jumper P15. I got 8.7mA. Do I have to remove some jumpers on the board, if yes which are they?

Then I got 8.37mA., In compile options of sampleSwitch the power saving option is enabled as "xPOWER_SAVING" instead of "POWER_SAVING" is that the issue?

Yes, that is the issue. You should use POWER_SAVING instead of xPOWER_SAVING.

No. I just removed all the jumpers from P1 and P10. Now there is nothing showing in the display. Just the USB_LED is only on. Then I measured the current from the jumper P15 (V_EM).

Try to refer to and measure CC2530EM directly without SmartRF05.

Directly means, just need to connect VDD and GND to CC2530EM right?. Is the pin P2.7 is actual vdd and P1.1 is actaul GND of the CC2530?

Hi YiKai Chen,

The CC2530 is sleeping now I got correct diagram as in this link for operation 1 and 2. But the idle current is measure using multimeter or energytrace is not good. I need the idle current around 1-5uA. But I am getting 76uA current. I am attaching the measured current using energytrace technology in the code composer studio. I am also attaching the DSO diagrams of operation1 and operation 2. Other than this operations I got another small waking diagram. I don't know what is that mean. I think that is the one which wastes the power. I don't what is that task, I just connected the end device and COO. The COO is Telegesis ETRX module and End device is my custom CC2530 board which uses main pin configuration.

My compile options are as given below:

Is there any power wasting option I have added? Or what things I have to check that wastes power?, I know there is code part to support smartrf05 board like LCD support, joystick, buttons, leds. I don't know how to turn of these leds. I want to know whether any gpios wasting power for leds.

I have an other problem, that the end device is not going to sleep when it again connected to the same COO after power cycle.

I don't use energytrace so I am not sure how accuracy it is. I suggest you to use power analyzer or oscilloscope to do the measurement.

Energytrace is good I got 7uA for ETRX357 module End Device, we cannot measure idle current using DSO because the idle the idle line showing in 0v position, I have another problem, this CC2530 End device is not connecting to COO after power cycle, and if give the command APP_CNF_BDB_START_COMMISSIONING again then the network will restore, but the end device will not sleep then.

What do you mean the end device doesn't sleep? Do you use sniffer to check if device joins back to coordinator?

The device doesn't go to sleep means, I am getting 8mA idle current after rejoining, not uA current, no I didn't setup the sniffer.

No it is not joining back to the COO. Because I cannot ping the end device or send messages to end device after power cycle. How to setup sniffer?. The End device is waking up for other task, please check this diagram:

This is not normal operation. This one is other than operation1 and operation2.

If you use EM357, you can use Silicon Labs Protocol Analyzer as Zigbee sniffer.

If you have CC2531EMK, you can use Ubiqua Protocol Analyzer as sniffer.
