USB Type C port for charging while data communication

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25814, TPS25814EVM

Hi,

I have a USB camera that links to the Samsung Tab A8 through a USB Type-C to Type-C cable. My goal is to charge the tablet while ensuring continuous communication between the Tab and Camera. Can someone recommend a suitable part to insert between the tab and camera for this particular situation, with a charging current of 1.5A? I am aware of one solution involving a USB hub, but I'd prefer an alternative approach without utilizing a hub.

  • Hi Ravi,

    Thank you for reaching out!

Can you give more details on your design requirements?

1- What type of charging standard would be required? Do you need to support BC 1.2?

2- Is the maximum current 1.5A?

3- Do you need two ports? One to connect the camera, and one to charge the Tablet?

    Best Regards,

    Aya

  • Hi Aya,

    Thanks for the response.

    The details are as below.

1- I need to support BC1.2 charging standard.

    2- Maximum current is 1.5A.

3- Three ports are required: one for the Tablet, a second for the camera, and a third for charging the Tablet. The first two ports will facilitate communication between the Tablet and the Camera, while the third port will handle charging, even during active USB communication.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Ravi,

Thank you for providing additional information.

I will look into this further and provide you with a device suggestion by Friday,

  • Hi Aya,

    Waiting for your response.

  • Hi Ravi,

    Thank you for your patience.

I would recommend the TPS25814 for your application. The TPS25814 is a stand-alone USB Type-C controller providing cable plug and orientation detection for one USB Type-C connector. It has BC 1.2 support as well.

  • Hello Aya,

    I appreciate your input.

I do have a question. Upon reviewing the TPS25814EVM datasheet, my understanding is that the Tab should be linked to the DFP, while the Camera should be connected to the UFP. Once the power supply is connected to the EVM, I assume that the Tab will initiate charging at a minimum of 1.5A while facilitating data transfer between the Camera and the Tab.. Could you confirm if my interpretation is correct?

    Best Regards,

    Ravi

  • Hi Ravi,

Yes, this would be dependent on your use-case. In your example, the camera (DFP) would be sending data to the tablet (UFP) and therefore, the connections you mentioned would be correct. See below from EVM User's Guide for an example setup with a flash drive (UFP Device) and a Laptop (DFP Host).

    Best Regards,

    Aya
