MCF8316AEVM: Variable brake torque

Part Number: MCF8316AEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCF8316A, MCF8316D

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am planning to use the MCF8316A to control a sensorless BLDC. In my application, I want the BLDC to act as a brake with variable torque. An external mechanism will drive the motor to a constant speed, then I want to use the BLDC to apply a reverse torque on the mechanism. The reverse torque should be variable.

So far, I have experimented with the brake function of the MCF8316A while the BLDC is stationary. The brake mode is All three low side FETs turned ON. Of course, this provides significant braking torque, more than enough. However, I want to modulate that torque.

Is it something that can be achieved with this IC ? Otherwise, any suggestion to achieve this ? What if I connect the 3 leads of the BLDC to GND via mosfets modulated at 20kHz with variable duty cycle.

Thank you !

Jp
