Batteries: the unsung hero of any mobile phone, tablet or notebook PC. This piece of technology remains unappreciated, because despite every charge we still wish our devices would last longer. And that’s too bad, because the battery pack represents some really great engineering.

Did you know that batteries are one of the oldest technologies? They date back more than two centuries to the Parthian Empire (approximately 250 B.C. to 500 A.D.) The first battery could grab close to 1V. Fast-forward to Alessandro Volta, who created the voltaic pile in the 1800s. (Learn more about the evolution of batteries.)

Today, 90kW/hr electric vehicles zip through streets at blazing speeds, while 10A/hr juice packs can charge all of your portable devices in less than an hour. This is where battery technology has taken us: to a world filled with flying drones capable of delivering packages and two-wheeled boards that walk for you, without even burning that many joules.

Batteries are the true sparks of innovation. Without batteries, we would not be able to do much of what we do today. I look forward to the world that batteries will present to us in the next few years as we demand more and more from them.

Happy Battery Day! What advancements in battery technology are you looking forward to seeing come to life?
