As the Director of TI’s OMAP™ Wireless Ecosystem, I had the privilege to participate in Wednesday’s Droid X launch event in New York, and listen to Dr. Sanjay Jha’s brief and passionate speech. Most of Dr. Jha’s senior leadership team was there as well, and executives from partner companies filled the room atop this Manhattan hotel on a beautiful evening. It was an outstanding gathering of industry trend setters.

During the Droid X unveiling, Dr. Jha mentioned that after a dozen of Android devices, Droid X shows that Motorola has “taken its game to the next level and can compete with the best in the industry.” The industry definitely seems to agree. Positive reviews are starting to roll in on top blogs like Laptop Mag, with more to come. Sites like Ars Technica believe Droid X represents “a new category of large form-factor touch-screen phones,” and Wired foreshadows that “Droid X will be the star in Motorola’s portfolio.”

Dr. Jha also emphasized that users buy phones not for one reason, but for many. Droid X hits multiple marks with a beautiful design, large and brilliant display, outstanding multimedia performance. This includes 720p record and playback, an 8-megapixel camera, social network aggregation and even Flash-10.1 in a summer upgrade that will come with Android 2.2 (check out our post following the Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 announcement). During the evening’s discussions, Dr. Jha and his team insisted on the importance of the ecosystem in this very unique time of mobile convergence with computing, TV and consumer electronics. The Droid X is packed with user-friendly application software from Motorola’s partners, many of whom are close partners of TI. Dr.Jha asked everyone in the room to send him ideas and feedback (he promised to read all his emails) on the event and device experience – evidence that Motorola clearly wants to nurture a strong, vibrant and innovative ecosystem.

In my role at TI, I also see the importance of growing and maintaining an effective cooperation with partners across many software technology domains, as they fuel the innovation of tomorrow. TI is well equipped with more than 300 ecosystem software partners who push the limit of our OMAP platforms to create the mobile excitement users want in future devices. Check our new web site by searching for “omap ecosystem” and see who is working with OMAP processors, and on what technology.

This ecosystem collaboration is evident in devices like the Droid X that are hitting store shelves today. As my colleague Eric previously mentioned, TI provided  1GHz OMAP3630 processor inside the Droid X, along with critical power management components. Together, these TI technologies deliver the high performance and low power that Droid X requires. Did I mention that one of Droid X’s most talked-about features is the WiFi Hot spot? We also provided the WiLink™ 6.0 connectivity combo chip that makes this a reality. TI couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this fantastic product!

Devices like the Droid-x are the result of an unprecedented industry cooperation, with a razor sharp focus on what users want, and how they want it. As Dr. Jha stated, “this is only the beginning for Motorola.” Get ready for the road ahead…I know TI is! – Fred
