New smart plug demo at electronica features new MSP430 i-series MCUs!

Just last week, we announced the new MSP430 i-series microcontroller family. With great integrated analog, this line of industrial microcontrollers is a great fit for metering, factory and building automation applications.

With the MSP430i2040 MCUs, we will also provide comprehensive reference designs to kick start new designs. The TIDC-SMARTPLUG-WIFI High accuracy, Wi-Fi-enabled smart plug reference design is a full solution that needs only three TI IC’s (SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC3200 wireless MCU, MSP430i2040 MCU and UCC28910D 700V Flyback Switcher) to enable a highly integrated, cloud-connected energy measurement solution.

The smart plug uses an MSP430i2040 MCU to monitor energy consumption for a single load and control the high voltage side of the design. This data is then passed to a CC3200 to communicate the data over Wi-Fi to both another device in the LAN and to a cloud server. The whole system is powered from a highly compact and efficient primary side regulated flyback power supply regulator using TI’s UCC28910D.  A solid-state relay enables the application to control the load based on its energy consumption.
