OTA for CC2538

Please setup OTA server and use SampleSwitch OTA example to run it to get familiar with OTA process.

I am already setup the OTA server.

And run the OTA sampleswitch program. But i dont know which process are executed in OTA client (smartRF06) board

But, Based on my knowledge is in the OTA client,

1) we can open the sample switch program through the iar embedded workbench.

2) Flash and create the image A using some steps based on the Zstack 3.0 pdf.

3) My question is we can build the program of image B on that same board or not ?

4) In case of same board, what is the process is going on that OTA client board ?

5)After building the image B on that same board, then i can change the linker file to A and  set the image property to HAL_IMG = 0. In these process, why we change the linker ? and what is the process is going on ?

6) Please explain me sir.

During Debugging the Dongle program. In the debug log, there is an error. It is attached below of that image.

which way to solve this error ?

Yes, Image A and B are for the same board.

If you are running Image A, you should do OTA with Image B. If you are running Image B, you should do OTA with Image A.

Image A and B are loaded to different flash area so they use different linker script.

Which Z-Stack and IAR version do you use? The IAR version should match what Z-Stack release note describes.

Z-Stack 3.0.2 or Z-Stack 3.0? In Z-Stack 3.0.2, release note mentions to use "CC2538 + SRF06EB:  EWARM  8.22.1". Please use matched IAR version to build OTA dongle.

You can build and download Image A from IAR then use Image B to do OTA.

Build and download OTA dongle program to another CC2538 to connect to PC so OTA server PC tool can communicate with it to do OTA to your CC2538 running Image A to Image B.

I am open the OTA_SERVER pc tool and connect the named dongle board to the pc over USB. Is you says the OTA_server pc tool is communicate direct with the ota dongle ? How is it possible ? Is there any function.

so, i can insert a file in OTA_server pc tool as image B or Image A ? But in these case image A with bootloader and we can dowload the image B and change the linker file and preprocessor in c/c++ compiler. what can i do?

which file is a OTA upgrade file and wherever it is founded?

Note: My Explanation uses Monitor And Test API so if it is not what you use, feel free to skip.

Since I had troubles implementing OTA and understanding how it works I can empathize so I will give my best explanation on how it works.

First thing first I imagine you have already formed the network and registered an endpoint on the coordinator.

1) You send an Image Notify Packet to the end-device you want to Upgrade. note that you can broadcast the message.

After this, the end-device will send a matching device request to check if the coordinator is an OTA server as well. 

This point right here made me sweat the most so when registering the endpoint make sure to set as InputCluster the 0x0019(OTA) Cluster.

2) The device will send you a Query Next Image Request with his informations (file version, stack version and so on)

3) Parse the OTA File to get the congruent informations about it and send them back as Query Next Image Response.

4) The Client will check if the informations are valid and start requesting blocks

5) From there on you send the bytes of the ota file as response.

The OTA dongle is designed for TI CC2538DK which would simulate a virtual com port on PC for OTA server to connect.

I could not understand the process occur in a OTA client board.

I guess in that board, first of all we can flash a image A with bootloader > then image A will be running in that  board.

Yes and Image B is download through OTA server + OTA dongle.

If you read the steps carefully in Z-Stack OTA Upgrade User's Guide.pdf, it's for client board only.

First of all, use the EWARM 9.30.1 version to client board and upload two images successfully by these version.But in dongle, there is an error i.e.

thats why i can ask which type of version can be used?

I use IAR EWARM 8.30.1 and I can build CC2538 OTA dongle successfully. If your 9.30.1 has built issue, you should use 8.20.1 which is mentioned by release note or try the same 8.30.1 version as I use.

In these process client board , Image A w=running and image B builded.  And the path will be set by the linker.

Dongle program is downloaded to the board and it is connected to the OTA_SERVER pc tool. 

we can send the program in ota_server pc tool which we builded i.e. image B.

Based on the guide references builded image i.e image B is a upgraded OTA image.

so, Generally i.e Applicationwise we have used these OTA in IOT. we upgrade some firmware to the far distance board form the OTA_server.
