INA236: Can ALERT assert high when the current exceeds expected max?

Part Number: INA236
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA233

Hi team,

Customer planned to use INA233 but changed to INA236 due to some reason.
INA236 looks not to assert if the current exceeds expected max current, unlike INA233.

Is my understanding correct?
If so, shoud I set the limit of shunt voltage to realize asserting high when overcurrent?
It means register setting will be below if my expected max current is 5A and shunt resister is 10mohm, right?
Other registers are default value.

6h: 8000h (SOL is 1 to set shunt voltage limit and bit11-14 are 0)
7h: 4E20h (20000d = 5A*10mohm/2.5uV)

Best regards,
Koyo

  • Hi Koyo,

Yes your understanding is correct. Setting a limit to shunt voltage is equivalent to setting a limit to current.

The register values are correct. Although if ALERT pin is desired to be active high, then the APOL bit should be set to ‘1’. As result register 6h should be written with 8002h.
