TLC3704: Common mode input voltage range

Hi Team, 

Customer is using comparator TLC3704 in one of the design, please see below query from component point of view:

 

  1. TLC3704 is powered up by using +/-3.3V.  And As per datasheet, V.ICR is 0V to VDD-1.5 (for −40°C to 85°C) which makes the input voltage range -3.3V to +1.8V. Is this understanding correct?
  2. What is the impact on output or overall functionality of comparator if the input voltage violates above condition on any of the input pins (inv or non-inv)?
  3. Can you suggest alternate comparator parts (push-pull output stage with wide input range)?

    1. Yes.

    2. The electrical characteristics are no longer guaranteed, and the device might not work at all.

    3. TLV3704, but it is slower.

    Hello Naveen,

    1. Yes, correct.

    2. The output could be incorrect when the inputs are outside the specified range. This behavior can vary lot to lot and device to device, so there is not a defined failure mode.

    3. The TLV3704 (note the "V") is the 16V nanopower comparator with inputs that can go 5V above the supply. However, it is much slower (36us vs 1us) and much lower output drive, but it would be P2P drop-in if speed and drive is not an issue.

    Of course, our suggestion would be to keep the inputs within the specified range.
