LM339: effect of operation above/below maximum/minimum junction temperature

Hi,

we wanna use the LM339 in our design. The junction temperature of this device is quite limited and we wondering if the Tjmin (0degC) and Tjmax (70degC) refer to loss of lifetime/reliability or precision of this device.

Is there any replacement of this device with higher Tj?

Hello Bea,

The LM139 is the -55 to +125C version (Military).

The LM239A or LM239-N (ex-National) is the -25 to 85C version.

The LM2901, LM2901V or LM2901-N (ex-National) is the -40 to +125C version.

Hi,

thanks for your prompt answer.

Do you know if there is different assembly materials or a different chip set used for the LM139 and/or the LM2901x or is it the same technology but the characterization is conducted with higher temperatures? Better said, is it the same chip but the rating is different based on the quality of the respective production batch? The electrical characteristics has only slight differences.

Hello Bea,

They are slightly different dies, but basically the same design and process - so pretty much 98.5% the same. The different "grades" do get different test limits. They are NOT "sorted" into the different grades. Either they pass that grade limits or scrapped.

But they will look and feel the same when operated within datasheet limits. So there should be no problem replacing existing LM339 designs with any of the family devices.
