INA194: functional differences with INA281

Hello team,

Customer is evaluating INA281 as a replacement for INA194.

According to customer: We have an issue with this component where we don’t have any voltage on the pin Out.

Could you please helps us to analyses how both differential function work and what are the main functional differences ?

Hello Juan,

Is the issue with the INA194? The issues with the INA194 with low Vsense (<20mV) is documented extensively in the datasheet. The error will be dependent on the VCM and VS voltage. In my opinion the INA281 is a better option. The INA281 cannot go below -4V VCM and the bandwidth changes slightly with VSense and IQ for the INA281 is larger. Other than those major differences I would lean toward the INA281. Below is a comparison link.

Hello Javier,

The were using INA194 in the past and they are moving to INA281.

As you said, INA281 part is better than INA194, but doesn’t work on their board and we don’t understand why as the INA281 seems a better version.

Within the datasheet they found in part 7.4.1 Unidirectional operation, that we need to apply at least a differential input voltage of 20mV, unlike the INA194 who doesn’t seem to have the same requirement. Could it be a reason why they have nothing on the output pin ?

Can you please explain the conditions that make the output pin (nothing), I would assume nothing is 0V referenced to the GND pin? The above information is not enough to give you a good reply. Also what do they get with the INA194 that makes it seem correct?

I think you are incorrect and the INA194 requires the voltage to be above 20mV. The INA281 does not require that.
