TLV9004: Output offset too big @ V_in_diff = 0V

Part Number: TLV9004
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV9002, , TINA-TI, OPA376

Ciao,

I just implemented 20 PCBs based on the sboa247 application note, but using the below values (based on the schematic at page 1):

IC = TLV9004IDR (SOIC-14)

V+ = Vex = 3.3 V

V- = 0 V (GND)

Vref = 574.6 mV

G = 434,65 V/V

R11 = 93.1 Ohm 1% tollerance

R4=R2 = 20 k Ohm 1% tollerance

R2=R3 = 4.99 k Ohm 1% tollerance

R8 =17.4 Ohm 1% tollerance

R5=R6=R7=R10 = 350 Ohm --> Strain gauges full bridge

R9 = 23.2 Ohm 1% tollerance

The circuit simulated in TINA-TI (with the TLV9002 op. amp. instead the TLV9004) works fine.

My problem is the output offset with zero input voltage from the Wheatstone bridge. Below you can read the measured values of "Vo - Vref" in the 20 PCBs (in milli Volts)

My questions are:

  • Do you think the TLV9004 is the wrong component for this applcation ?
  • In the application note, you set the gain at 1001V/V using the TLV9002, how big was your output offset error in the sboa247 application note ?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Marco

  • Hi Marco,

    Welcome to the E2E Forums.

    The test results are as expected given the offset voltage range of the TLV9004 and the gain used in the bridge amplifier.

    You may be able to calibrate out this offset, but even small changes in temperature could significantly cause this offset calibration to be ineffective.

    It may be necessary to use an amplifier with a lower Vos if your application demands less variation in DC offset at 0V Vin. Resistor tolerance will also influence linearity and error associated with bridge sensor measurement.

    The TINA model can be used to test this circuit, though keep in mind the model defaults to use the typical TLV900x Vos specification at 25C for simulation.

    What are your accuracy requirements for the application?

    Thanks,

    Jacob

  • Hi Marco,

    the appnote recommends the OPA376 as alternative.
