VCA821: Alternative product to VCA821 with digital control

Part Number: VCA821
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMH6518, LMH6881

Hi team,

My customer is considering alternative device to VCA821 that can adjust the gain from the digital signal. I searched TI.com and found out LMH6518. But LMH6518's slew rate is much lower than VCA821.

If you have any other suggestions, could you please give me your recommended device?

[Requirements]

Adjustable gain with digital signal

Supply Voltage: +/- 5V

Bandwidth: Equal to or greater than VCA821

Slew Rate: Equal to or greater than VCA821

VGA Gain: Equal to or greater than VCA821

(They prefer devices with characteristics similar to the VCA821)

Thank you for your help.

  • Hello Takemura,

I agree with you, LMH6518 is a digital alternative with similar gain range. If speed is a concern, I would also suggest the LMH6881, but this part supply voltage max is +/-5.25V and has a slightly lower gain range of 26dB.

If VCA821 is an ideal fit for the customer. Would it be possible (in terms of board space or size constraints) for the customer to include a discrete version of digital to analog control? For a low cost version, this could be as simple as using a digital potentiometer at the gain control voltage pin of the device.

    Thank you,

    Sima
