INA228: Current Monitor IC Recommandation

Hi TI Team,

I am Sanket Patadiya from Volansys Technologies.
We need some suggestions regarding current monitor ICs which can measure below range.
1. 1nA to 15A
2. 1mA to 2A

Will the INA228 current monitor IC solve our purpose? Will INA228 measure the 1nA as well as the 15A current?

Looking to get the feedback as quickly as possible.
We need some suggestions regarding current monitor ICs which can measure below range.
1. 1uA to 15A
2. 1uA to 1A

Will the INA228 current monitor IC solve our purpose? Will INA228 measure the 1uA as well as the 1A current?

Hi Sanket,

Unfortunately it doesn't seem realistic to measure 1uA to 15A. We can figure this by calculating the Current_LSB with 15A max

Current_LSB = 15 / (2^19) = 28.61uA. This would mean that every LSB of current would be 28.61uA.

We could reproduce this math with the 2nd situation of 1uA to 1A. Current_LSB = 1 / (2^19) = 1.907uA.

Hi Mohamed,

Based on the minimum offset voltage Vos=1 uV and maximum full-scale voltage of 163mV.

We did the below math.

Using Rsense=10mohm

Imax= Vfs/Rsense= 163mV/10mohm= 16.3A

Imin=Vos/Rsense= 1uV/10mohm= 0.1mA= 100uA

Is the above calculation correct? or Does that mean we can measure 100uA to 16.3A using 10mohm Shunt.

Hi Sanket,

This math works out, however, you must keep in mind the resolution of the INA228. The math I stated above represents the possibilities with the resolution of the part.

One last question is:

For the Current measurement: Would you prefer using the INA228 with internal ADC? or any other Current sense amplifier with external ADC?

Considering 100uA to 15A range

You could potentially use a higher resolution ADC alongside one of our analog current sense amplifiers.
