INA188: TI Drop-In Alternatives for supply

Hi Team,

One of my customers is having a hard time finding large public supply of the INA188IDR. I know there is a tube version available, the INA188ID, but is there another device that is a drop-in replacement that has a tape and reel? When comparing GPN, the INA828 is shown as a drop in replacement here, but when comparing full orderable on ti.com, the 828 does not come up and only calls the INA821 as a same functionality replacement.

Is the INA828IDR and subsequently the INA828ID a drop-in replacement for the INA188IDR?

Hi Trevor,

Yes, INA828 is pin-to-pin compatible with INA188 (see below) including its gain equations whereas INA821 is NOT. The main difference between INA828 and INA188 is its input common-mode voltage range where INA188 extends within 100mV to negative rail while INA828 is 2V from either rails. Other than that, these two parts are equivalent even though they use vastly different topologies - INA188 is a zero-drift while INA828 is a linear instrumentation amplifier.

Hi Marek,

Would the INA828IDR be a true drop-in replacement, i.e. no layout or hardware changes required, and it would work for all applications? What does pin-to-pin mean here?

Pin-to-pin compatible means the package and functionality of each pin of these parts are physically the same - no layout changes needed. However, each part has somewhat different bandwidth, offset, IQ, etc. characteristics and depending on the specific details of the application may both work exactly the same or may require some optimization like for example different compensation scheme.

Yes, that’s exactly right. Also, you should make sure you do stability simulations.
