BQ79600EVM:Initial investigation of BESS system

Part Number: BQ79600EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616, TIDA-010271, TIDA-010253, BP-AM2BLDCSERVO, , USB2ANY

Tool/software:

Hello team.

I would like to purchase the BQ79616EVM to build a BESS system using the BQ79616.

I am checking the Battery energy storage system
Products and reference designs
to find out what is needed for the research.

The system I am considering has more than 200 battery cells connected in series.

I think I need the following configuration: MCU--Bridge IC--Battery management IC

My understanding is that this can be achieved with TIDA-010253 and multiple TIDA-010271. Is this correct?

As a first step, I would like to purchase the EVM and check the software.

If I want to check the configuration of MCU--Bridge IC--Battery management IC,
Is it possible to check by purchasing the BQ79616EVM, BQ79600EVM, and BP-AM2BLDCSERVO?

  • Hello Kazuki,

That's correct! Slight smile. At least for the BMS portion you would only need the bq79616EVM and bq79600evm.

But I am not familiar with the BP-AM2BLDCSERVO, so not sure what this one is.

  • Thank you for your answer.

For the bq79616EVM and bq79600evm, are the included parts sufficient for connecting them?

According to the user guide, it seems that the TMS570 LaunchPadTm is used as the host controller. However, I need an Ethernet interface for the host controller (to communicate with the host via ModbusTCP).

Are there any recommended host controller evaluation boards?

  • Hello Kazuki,

You do not need the TMS570. However, if you want to communicate with the BQ79616 or BQ79600 EVM's using our GUI, you would need to also purchase the USB2ANY. This will allow you to evaluate the parts using our dedicated GUI.

This would allow some general evaluation of the system.

We also have development files that I believe should be in the product pages of these devices, if you want to test the system using a microcontroller like the TMS570.

Let me know if you have any other questions there!

    Best Regards,

  • This is a diagram from the BQ79616EVM User Guide. I would like to achieve this configuration by combining evaluation boards.

It communicates with the host via CAN Bus, but since it is assumed that Modbus TCP will be used here, an Ethernet interface is required.

Can you suggest a product that will achieve this?

  • Hello Kazuki,

You can communicate with the MCU however you want. The TMS570 launchpad seems to only require an USB to communicate with a computer. We have example code for the TMS570 as well.

If you are wondering other ways to communicate to the host MCU, I would create a new thread to ask the MCU experts of your MCU of interest.
