Procedure to utilize external shunt, any standard steps or tips? Also, do I need external VCC or will INA228 be powered from buss ( regulated down to 5V or 3.3V ) ? thanks.

Hi Wally,
Procedure to utilize external shunt, any standard steps or tips?
Please ensure your shunt value adheres to the specifications listed in Section 8.2.2.1 of the datasheet.
Also, do I need external VCC or will INA228 be powered from buss ( regulated down to 5V or 3.3V ) ? thanks.
You will need an external supply of 3.3V or 5V.

Shunt is deltec ( now Rideon )
type: RSB-500
Rated Current (A): 500
Operating Current (A): 333
Resistance (mOhm) 50mV Output: 0.1000
Resistance (mOhm) 100mV Output: 0.2000
Concerning the external power, for the INA228, must it be independent from the source which will be monitored (48VDC nominal) or bucked down from the 48VDC to 3.3 or 5.0VDC?
Thanks!
Hi Wally,

A separate source is recommended to ensure your supply is stable and can replicate the results in our datasheet.
The Rshunt value is determined by the maximum voltage and maximum current you intended to sense across the shunt resistor. For example, the INA228 can measure a full-scale differential input of ±163.84 mV or ±40.96 mV across a resistive shunt sense element with common-mode voltage support from –0.3 V to +85 V. So if the ADC range you pick is +/- 163.84mV then your Rshunt calculation will be the following:
I'd recommend going over the datasheet again.
