LMG2610: Why does TI say the LMG2640 is “intended to be turned on at ZVS or DCM switching conditions”?

Hi there,

Why do you think the good folks at TI say the LMG2640 is “intended to be turned on at ZVS or DCM switching conditions”? See page 22.

I see no fundamental reason for this to be so with GaN. The only potential reason (as far as I know) is limited dissipation with the puny SMT package.

My intention is hard switching amps.

Hello Jim,

At this point, LMG2610 is intended to be used in only soft-switching applications such as AHB or LLC as examples.

If you are looking for an integrated half-bridge with hard-switching capabilities, please check out LMG2650

What I want to know is why. Both parts are a GaN type and are well suited for hard switching. Why is the LMG2610 not rated for this switching mode?

Could it be added Pd?

GaN is well-suited for hard-switched applications, right?

Hi Jim,

These devices have not yet been qualified for hard-switching operation at this point. This qualification is needed to ensure that the device abides by TI's expectation for lifetime reliability.

We do have plans on ensuring that these devices can undergo this qualification process to ensure that they can eventually be suitable for hard-switching operation.
