OPA344: Operating outside of Max input voltages

I am looking through the Datasheet and found a section near the absolute max section saying "Input terminals are diode-clamped to the power supply rails. Input signals that can swing more than 0.5V beyond the supply rails should be current-limited to 10mA or less." Does this apply to situation where input signals may be continuously run beyond the voltage rails? For example, if the voltage rails were +5.0V and 0.0V, could the input signals be run continuously at -0.7V or 6.0V as long as the current is clamps to 10mA or less. How does this effect the lifetime of the part? 

  • The device will not be damaged.

    The diode will clamp the voltage at the input pin to a lower value. The remaining voltage is still outside the specified input voltage range, so correct operation is not guaranteed.

  • For as long as the input current is limited to less than 10mA, the part will NOT be damaged because most of the voltage is dropped across the input resistor, R1 - see below.

    Having said that, exposure of the part to Absolute Maximum rated conditions for an extended period of time may effect device reliability - see below.
