TPA3126D2: Operating with no load

Part Number: TPA3126D2

Tool/software:

Can the TPA3126D2 be operated with no load attached. Reason for operating without load is to test if amplifier is operating without playing sound to the user, measurement circuitry exist to measure output, AC coupled.

  • Hey Frerik,

You can attach a chassis resistor plus inductor instead of a traditional speaker across the output terminal. The load could be 4 or 8 ohm load + 33uH inductors in series. This load should be connected across the output terminal and any measurement setup would be connected across this load.

    Ore.

  • I understand that is an option but I wanted to make sure I can run it without a load connected. My understanding is that the output stage of the class D amplifier is very similar to a the output stage of a buck converter and those can be run without a load or a small load.

  • Hey Frerik,

The audio device is usually attached to a load for end products or simulated one for measurement purposes. Although it's not normal practice, the device could run without a load or simulated load connected. All you would observe is a pwm switching signal.

    Ore.
