Output current of op-amp

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC071

1. For op-amp tlc071 typical value of output current is 57 mA (given in the datasheet).  Now how to decide this given current is for which value of load resistence because ultimately output current of op-amp will depend on applied load?

  • Akhilesh,

Generally you would use this op amp with much less than 57mA output current. Assume that the op amp output voltage can swing all the way to each rail. Calculate the maximum current that would flow in your load resistance under this condition. Calculate this current for both sourcing and sinking conditions. Figures 5, 6. 7 and 8 in the data sheet show the output voltage swing capability of the op amp under various conditions. Figures 5 and 7 show current sourcing and figures 6 and 8 show current sinking conditions. This gives you an indication of how close the op amp output can swing to the rail under your load conditions.

  • So sir it means output of any op-amp can be directly connected to the input of msp430( provided voltage range is less than 2.5v) but as far as the value of  current is concern msp430 will take care of it by itself....

  • Akhilesh,

Yes, that is correct. Driving the MSP430 the output current will likely be very small.
