TLV2471

The data sheet does not specify what the maximum undershoot could be on an input into the op amp. Our application uses a voltage follower (output tied to the negative input). We clamp the positive input with a diode to the negative power supply and a diode to the positive power supply. How much undershoot/overshoot will the positive input tolerate without damaging the op amp?

  • Hello Forrest,

According to the datasheet, the input common-mode voltage is limited by the supply rails.  Though there is no current steering diode to VDD on the inputs, there is an ESD structure whose clamping voltage can vary with process.  While your clamping diodes will help protect the device, you can minimize the likelihood of triggering the ESD cell by using a low Vf schottky diode from the input to VDD.  We also recommend trying to limit the current into the non-inverting input terminal by including a series resistor (e.g. 1kohm).
