LM7321-Q1 Device damage when output short to GND

Hello,

Please advise if device temperature might rises too much and smoke and/or fire when output continue to short to GND.

Best Regards.

  • Hello Toshio,

See not 3 in the Abs Max table:

Note 3: Applies to both single-supply and split-supply operation. Continuous short circuit operation at elevated ambient temperature can result in exceeding the maximum allowed junction temperature of 150°C. Short circuit test is a momentary test. Output short circuit duration is infinite for VS ≤ 6V at room temperature and below. For VS > 6V, allowable short circuit duration is 1.5 ms.

Yes. It can start to smoke if the short is left on continuously at high supply voltages. It does have current limiting, but not thermal shutdown. It quickly overheats - especially on the SOT-23 package where you just cannot get the heat out fast enough.

See the "OUTPUT SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT AND DISSIPATION ISSUES" section on page 19 of the datasheet.

    Regards,
