OPA2365: Using dual supply in OPA2365

Part Number: OPA2365
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMV797

Hi,

Is there any difference in architecture between single supply and dual supply op-amps. Can I use positive and negative supply in an single supply such as op-amp OPA2365.

Regards,

Tapas

  • Hi Tapas,

Yes. The OPA2365 supports both single as well as dual supply. So, it should be possible to use both positive and negative supply for the OPA2365.

  • But in the datasheet why it is written single supply operational amplifier, can you elaborate more on this.
  • Tapas,

The single supply op-amp is usually specified if there is a digital logic pin that needs some common-mode (usually GND) reference, which is no where the case for the OPA2365. You might also want to refer to Section 7.1: Overview that mentions the part could work for both single as well as dual supplies, which is usually the case for most op-amps.

  • Thanks Rohit for your valuable reply,

I got your point, I have a small doubt, do all dual supply op-amps can be used as single side op-amp and vice versa. Is there any internal hardware difference between single supply or dual supply op-amp. Op-amp such as LMV797 is a single supply op-amp or dual supply op-amp.

What to look definitely in a datasheet to qualify any op-amp as single supply or dual supply op-amp.

    Regards,
    Tapas

  • Hi Tapas,

Yes. All op amps can be used as single or dual supply.

Voltage is just a measure of potential between two points. A LMV797 will work the same for a V- =0V and V+ =5V supply with a -0.3 to 4V input as it does for a V- =-2.5V and V+ =2.5V supply with a -2.8V to 1.5V input. All that matters is how each pin is referenced to the supply rails.

    Best regards
