    So this device is an earlier version of the 

    VCA820 or the faster VCA821. There are linear in V/V versions as well. The datasheets include considerable applications information. 

    The dB/V versions were intended for gain adjust loops where the dB/V holds the same loop gain over gain setting - the linear in V/V versions where for open loop gain setting situations.
