TLV2401: About absolute maximum rating of common-mode input voltage range

Part Number: TLV2401
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV9001,

Hi,

Common-mode input voltage Absolute maximum rating is not described in the data sheet.
Could you tell me Absolute maximum rating or common-mode input voltage and IN+pin, IN-pin?
Customers understand the recommended operating voltage range.
However, customers require absolute maximum ratings in application design.

Regards,
Yusuke

  • Hi Tsukui,

Please suggest your customer to operate the device within the recommended operating conditions found in the datasheet. The input common-mode voltage range for this device is (-0.1V) to (Vcc + 5V) for single-supply. Unfortunately we don't have information about the abs max for this parameter. Is your customer worried about an application condition where the input voltage range spikes up for a short period of time ? If so, can you please share a schematic of the use case ? In some cases, you can add a resistor in series with the input pins to limit the current going into the op amp.

Finally, its always best to stay in the recommended operation range of the device because even if you don't exceed the abs max rating, you may notice abnormal op amp behavior if operated beyond recommended operating condition.

Please let me know if you've any further questions.

    Best Regards,

    Bala Ravi

  • Hi Ravi-san,

    Thank you for your response.
I inform the customer that I want to keep the recommended voltage.

→I have not heard specific voltage information from customers.
For example, The following data sheet (TLV9001) shows the absolute maximum ratings.
Therefore, customers also want that information for this device.

By the way, TLV2401 differs in absolute maximum rating of VCC (17V) and recommended operating voltage (16V).
In this case, the absolute maximum rating of the common-mode voltage is correct in understanding that 17V+0.5V?

  • Hi Bala,

I agree with Tsukui. The TLV2401 is a very nice and interesting OPAmp. But unfortunately very important specifications are missing. The "absolute maximum ratings" and the section "application information" urgently need a revision. Why not showing a simplified schematic of input circuitry like the datasheet of LT1783 does?

  • Hi Tsukui,

I would like to emphasis again that limiting the input current to less than 10mA is important since the abs max common-mode input voltage range is unknown. I understand most of the newer datasheets have this parameter listed in abs max but unfortunately this part is almost 20 years old and this spec was possible not abs max tested back then. I think the common-mode voltage abs max of (17V+0.5V) is a decent guess but I can't guarantee that it's correct because this rating changes based on process technology and the input structure used. If the customer is able to provide a schematic of the use case, we would be able to better assist or answer any of their concerns with the circuit.

But please bear with me as I check with some experts from my team if they've any additional information on this device.

    Hi Kai,

I agree with this you. This is a great part, but unfortunately this parameter wasn't tested during the time of release 20 year ago. I can't promise a datasheet revision in the near future but we will see what we can do about this.

  • Thanks, Bala :-)

  • Hi Tsukui,

After some digging and asking around. One of my coworker has done some extensive tests on these devices in the past.

The abs max input common-mode voltage for TLV2401 is 20V max or (Vcc+5V) whichever is smaller.

I can't promise anything about a datasheet revision at the moment. But please let me know if you've any other questions.

    Best Regards,
