LM139A: Output surge current rating for capacitive load

Part Number: LM139A

In the linked thread, it was discussed that the 20mA output current limit should not be exceeded. One of the replies suggested that infrequent excursions above this limit may have little impact on life of the product.

Is there a rough guide for what frequency is acceptable? Is it in the 10's or 100's or more?

  • Hello Kiran,

The output  will self current-limit to around 12-16mA - assuming a correct (positive) sinking current (see figure 3). That should not cause damage unless it causes any other parameters to be violated (such as max voltage or power dissipation).

If the output is being pulled below ground (negative), then that is where damage can occur since this is reverse biasing the body junctions and they are not designed to handle large currents. Since that current is not regulated, the larger the currents can cause more "damage".
