OPA2990: EMC EN61326-1

Part Number: OPA2990
Hi Engineer from TI, I have a more specific question regarding the OPA2990 operational amplifier and its EMC protection. We test EMC according to DIN EN 61326-1. We currently see no problem with ESD. At burst 1kV the operational amplifier breaks. So far, we have used a unidirectional TVS diode (SMF30A) against GND at the output of the OPA2990. We also use a bidirectional TVS diode from VCC of the OPA2990 against GND. In your opinion, which external protective circuit is recommended so that the OPA2990 can withstand DIN EN 61326-1.
  • Hello Rui,

Does the circuit have input pins or output pin(s) tied directly (resistance zero) to low impedance nodes. If yes, try adding a [1k, 100 ohms] resistor between device pin and the printed circuit board. de-solder and lift the pin to make space.  Then try the surge test with the modification.

If you can curve trace a broken device, see which pin(s) was damaged, add more protection on that pin.

  • Hi Zui,

protection circuitry can be very individual. So can you please show a schematic? And please tell something about the circuit, the input signal, the bandwidth, the load, etc.
