TLV3401: Can I pull the open drain output above Vcc? If so, by how much?

Part Number: TLV3401
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV7041,

The datasheet doesn’t give maximum voltage limit for the open drain output, hence the question in the title.

Thank you!

  • Hi Lauren,

Let me try to dig into what the allowable abs max voltage on the output is. It is strange it isn't listed in the datasheet.

For now, I would still follow the max current rating on output of +/-10mA. So depending on your pullup voltage and resistor value, you can still calculate if the output current is within the allowable range.

If your application is low voltage, we also have the TLV7041, which is another nanopower open drain comparator that shares the same SOT-23 package as the TLV3401. This device has a max abs. voltage of 7V on its open drain output. However the device is more limited in some regards as it doesn't have the same supply range or common mode range as the TLV3401. Feel free to contact me offline if you would like to share more details about your application, as our team can better assist you via email.

I will try to get back to you ASAP on the abs max output voltage for the TLV3401 in the meantime.

    Thanks,

    Jonny

  • Hi Lauren,

For this device, please do not pull the open drain output above Vcc.
