INA301: INA301 as a low-side current sense

Part Number: INA301

Hi,

according to the datasheet the INA301 is designed for high-side current sense. Since I have a 48V battery pack

I am considering using the INA301 as a low-side current monitor. This way the 36V max input limit should not be a problem.

Would this work? Is there anything I am missing?

Thanks,

Miguel

  • Miguel,

Thanks for using the E2E forums! The INA301 common mode goes down to -0.1V, so this device absolutely can be used on the low side. Keep in mind that there are some trade-offs when moving to low-side measurement, the largest of which is that with the sense resistor now in the path between your load and ground, you will lose the ability to detect faults to ground from the load.

You can learn more about the trade-offs of low-side versus high-side here.
