INA226-Q1: The IC pulls its SDA line high occasionally when load is connected.

Part Number: INA226-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA226

Hey there

We are using an INA226 for sensing current on the low side in a high side switching application as shown in the schematics below.
The issue here is that if we connect and disconnect a 9A resistive load a bunch of times the INA226 pulls its SDA line high and doesn't respond unless restarted.

  • Hi,

It seems the schematic didn’t come through, please attach again.

Does “restarted” mean power down and up the entire board? Have you performed any test to show that it is only INA226 not responding, yet the controller or any other devices on the bus is working properly?

    Regards, Guang

  • Hey there

    1) By restarted I mean powering on and off the Current sense amplifier.
    2) Yes only INA226 is not responding as if we perform the same connection and disconnection of load with INA226 disconnected from the I2C lines the SDA is not being pulled high and other ADC on the same Bus is performing fine.

  • Hi Abhijeet,

Under normal working conditions, INA226 doesn’t have the capability to pull SDA high. However it is hard to say in situations where it falls outside of its normal operating condition.

Can you capture some scope plots to show:

    (1)   I2C waveform – INA226 not responding

    (2)   Transient pin voltage on “SENSE+” during load plug/unplug, especially the time right before INA226 locks up.

    Regards, Guang
