Our customer is looking for TI PN OPA2234U, but we only have OPA2234U-1 in stock. We are looking to understand the difference between the two PN's so we can communicate this to them.

Hi David,
The OPA2234U and OPA2234U-1 op amps are obsolete, discontinued products. The OPA2234U-1 is certainly a spin of that OPA2234U very likely for an electrical parameter variation, package material variation, or other variation from the standard product. We don't have any information about the U-1 variant because it may have been created long ago; possibly during the time when Burr-Brown developed and manufactured the product over 20 years ago.
Can you provide the name of the distributor who can supply the OPA2234U-1 product? Do they have lot/date code information on the reels or tubes the product is contained? There is a small possibility that they have some information about the U-1 product.

The -1 variants are listed with status "PREVIEW" in the datasheet from 2006; the next revision I've found (from 2018) has dropped them.
The datasheet does not mention any differences in the pinout, electrical characteristics, or package. I guess they have a different orientation in the tape.
Hello,
Would we be able to tell our customer that they are okay to use OPA2234U-1 in lieu of the OPA2234U if we let them know the subtle differences in regards to pin orientation in the tape? I can dig into the lots we received of this product if needed just to be sure.
Thank you
Hello David,
I found a description of the OPA2234U-1 at Digi-Key who sources the product from Rochester Electronics. Often, when I product is obsoleted and there is low demand for it an option for TI is to move the remaining inventory to a distributor that deals in inventorying and selling such product. The Digi-Key page lists the electrical parameters descriptions for the OPA2234U-1 and a corresponding number or range is provided. I think the intent is a "typical" number or range, and no other assurance's are made. I suspect the OPA2234U-1 is offered with the electrical performances specified as such and the extent to which they are offered.
Certainly when this material was manufactured by TI, or Burr-Brown, the devices were fully tested electrically. There is a high probability that the performance of the OPA2234U-1 devices will be sufficient to satisfy applications requiring the "general purpose" classification of the device.
If there is a pin orientation in the tape issue that is certainly something the customer would need to know.

The datasheet that mentions the -1 variants is "SBOS055A". (It is too large to attach here.)
It does not mention any differences; I'm guessing at the tape orientation because that is the only information that Burr-Brown would have provided separately.
Hi Clemens,
If you can provide me a URL for the OPA2234U-1 datasheet I will see if I can discern any differences from the OPA2234U.
