INA180: INA180-output waveform is wrong

Part Number: INA180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA181

Hi Ti Team,

I encountered a problem while debugging the INA180,The output waveform is as follows,Normally it should be a square wave,Can you help me see the reason?

  • Hi Switch,

    Thanks for using E2E!

What is most likely happening here is that you are witnessing saturation recovery effects of the INA180. Like any amplifier, the INA180 is not able to truly swing to its rails. Running in single supply configuration, this means that you cannot truly drive the device to ground. As you can see in the INA180 datasheet, for a load condition of 10kΩ, typically you can drive to about 500uV (and variation in devices shows a worst case of up to 5mV max), but attempting to drive past this point will saturate the amplifier. Once the amplifier is saturated, it requires time to bring itself back into the linear range, hence the abnormalities you are seeing on your scope.

A straightforward solution here would be to use the INA181 instead, and provide a reference voltage to REF so the output sits off of the swing limitation enough to avoid this issue. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
