LMxxxx EOL Information

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA1662, OPA1664, LM833, LM833-N, LM837, OPA1652

Unfortunately some of the LM devices got caught up in an unavoidable technology process-node end of life. fortunately we can support orders for the device through the LTB date of 28 Sept 16, and can ship product through 28 March 2017.

TI's OpAmp business has a huge portfolio of newer parts that you can select from. Please refer to below table to find an alternative part for the LM part.

Our apologizes for any inconvenience this causes.

  • The LM833 has all the packages that the LM833-N has.
    Isn't the LM833D a better match for LM833M/NOPB and LM833MX than OPA1652AID?
    LM833MMX/NOPB crosses to LM833DGK
  • LME49870MA/NOPB:
Power Supply Voltage Range: ±2.5V to ±22V

    Alternative part OPA1611AID:
    Wide Supply Range: ±2.25 V to ±18 V

    This is disappointing.

  • "TI's OpAmp business has a huge portfolio of newer parts that you can select from..."

Who gets to pay for the paper work and new regulator approvals? :-(

  • The LME49710 in the TO99 package is not on this list but all the other versions are. Weird.
  • Thank you all for your comments on this thread. We realize the difficult position this obsolescence may put you in, and we do our best to prevent obsoleting devices, but sometimes it is an unfortunate necessity for us.

The good news is you have almost a year to place your final orders, with another six months past that date to receive them. (9/28/16, and 3/28/17) Please work with your distributors to place and schedule your orders.

If you need help determining the best replacement, or in the redesign of your affected circuitry, please let us know, and we will be happy to assist you. All I ask is that you start a new thread requesting assistance.

Thank you, and have a great day!

    Best regards,

    Don

  • I am the guy who posted this thread to start with - the funny thing is that EOL list that you put up does not even contain the LM837. It does contain the LM833 but that is a vastly different part, not just being a dual instead of a quad. The LM837 had a special feedback linearized output stage and gave much lower distortion readings than the LM833. I can still remember when Bob Pease assured me that the LM837 was one of t heir core products but of course that was when they were National Semiconductor.  I would like to think that the absense of the LM837 from your published in this thread EOL substitutions means that you've come to your senses but I am not going to bet on that one!

The only usable substitute is (from TI) OPA1664 but that is three times the price.  Another large semiconductor company has noticed the coming obsolesence of this audio work horse and is working with us to develop a spec for a commercially viable audio quad opamp which will be ready (hopefully) before your last time buy dates.

  • Hi Diego,

Thanks for your information.  If LM833MMX/NOPB will be EOL, and I need to find the pin to pin solution for the existing products.

    Could LM833MMX/NOPB be replaced by  OPA1652AID or LM833DGKR ?

    Due to the package is different, LM833MMX is 8VSSOP , OPA1652AID is 8SOIC, and LM833DGKR is 8VSSOP.

Did I get the wrong information? Hopefully to get your suggestion.

    thanks.

    Mac.

  • My suggestion for a replacement part for LM833 would be 5532.  5532 is an unbeatable, if older, dual op amp for the money. It has better performance and has multiple manufacturers still making it. If you opt to use OPA1652 be careful. That is a CMOS process and the noise has a strong 1/f component that rises sharply below 1KHz. If that matters you need to be aware of it.

I mentioned before that LM833 and LM837 are very different parts. We were using about 200,000 pcs of LM837 per year but we don't use any LM833.

We have started using OPA1664 in some locations to replace LM837 but our QA department is reporting a "large" (about 50 out of 500) number of test rejections because of popcorn noise. TI have, I am told, acknowledge the problem and will begin screening for poporn noise but there is as yet no certain date by which stock we buy will be guaranteed to be free of this rather too common silicon defect.

  • Mac,

    LM833DGKR is a direct replacement for LM833MMX/NOPB.
It is not the same die but it was designed to work the same.
  • Hi Team,
We can use LME49860MAX/NOPB as below although you would recommend to use OPA1612AID instead of LME49860MA/NOPB.
So, in the future, do you have a plan that LME49860MAX/NOPB will be EOL ?
    Best regards,
    Kato
  • Hi, Kato-san,

If the products aren't listed on the original list, then we have no plans to NRND the others (package options).

  • Hi Don-san,

    Thank you for your information.
We will recommend to replace LME49860MA/NOPB with LME49860MAX/NOPB to our customer.

    Best regards,
    Kato

  • I am led to believe by our distributors that LM837 has been taken off of the EOL list. If so that is good news.  Could someone from Texas Instruments please confirm this?

For new designs in this confusing period we are replacing quad op amps with dual opamps because for audio application type parts there is a wider choice.  For example 5532, OPA1662, AD8672, many others. Two dual opamps are only slightly larger than a quad.

  • Hi Dave,

The information from your distributor is correct. LM837 has been reinstated to active status.
