TAS5721EVM: No sound with PurePath Mother Board

Part Number: TAS5721EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5721, , PCM3168

Dear Experts,

I´m a little bit confused about the EVM setup for theTAS5721EVM which might be the reason why I hear no sound on phono or speaker outputs.

First of all I do not find any matching documentation to my brand new "PurePath Console Motherboard AIP006G". All I found is some documentation for older hardware versions( Feb. 2015) . After some investigations and asking in this forum I download the PurePath SW Version 1.16 and load the TAS5721_PPCMB  target. This was not documented but I got this information in this forum. In this case I assume I load the right target which hopfully match my hardware version of the PurePath Motherboard. In fact the hardware has more I/O than I can select/see at the block diagran which is shown by the selected target.
Nevertheless I check if a simple analog audio input can be heard by the PurePath Phono out which should me indicate if the selected targte is working. The audio can be heard by USB input and Analog input so I assume I´m working with the right target now.
The next step is to check the TAS5721EVM board´s major functionality. Unfortunately the displayed block diagram is different to the document ( june 2013). I do not change anything and so I assume that the audio signal which is processed successfully at the PurePath board is routed to the TSA5721EVM. I connect two speakers and a headphone but there is no sound. I try several settings but never get any sound out.

The target of the evaluation is to set up a 2.1 System which should be simple to set up. But If I switch the radio Button "mode" at the PurePath Software nothing changed at the block diagram. I assumed that the 3ch will be enabled.

I´m sorry but all documentation is quite old and do not reflect the current state. The EVM setup is not working in a basic configuration. This is not what I expect and not what was promissed "Simply graphical setup"

Nevertheless: I assume the setup will work but it seemed that there is some undocumented software or special cconfiguration setups are necessary.

Please be so kind and provide me a documentation how to bring the EVM system alive and how to setup a 2.1 system using the TSA5721.

Thanks a lot for your support in advance

Karsten

P.S. I´m sorry for my bad english...

  • Hi Karsten,

Very sorry for the confusion, the document for TAS5721 is not updated. I'm very impressed by your strong ability of resolving problem. Please find the attached document for the procedure of TAS5721 EVM+PPCMB set up.

    TAS5721 EVM + PPCMB setup.pdf

From your description, there seems no obvious problem in your set-up. When you switch the Mode to '2.1', the bottom path should be activated as the following picture showing.

Could you please try to enlarge the input amplitude or AMP volume? Please also check the I2C communication is working normally.

I think your English is very good, English is not my native language either, but I believe there isn't any problem in our communication.

    Best regards,

    Shawn Zheng

  • Dear Shwan

Thank you very much for your support and suggestions.

I double check the installation procedure described in the linked document. The I2C communication is working, the processing of analog input using a 0dBv sine signal fine because I get the output at the phone jack of the PurePath EVM board. Additionally I re-check the USB digital audio IN it´s working fine. But there is no output at the TSA5721.

I try to check I2S data at the Ext I2S connector with my logic analyser but I do not see any signal. Unfortunatley my logic analyser has only max. 24M/s sampling rate so if the I2S signals to fast I will see nothing. The I2C data ( SDA/SCL ) are working.

If I push the Mode Button shortly a message is displayed ( to fast for human to read ) but the block diagram is not changing to 2.1 mode.

The PuerPath Hardware which I use has the Revision "F" as I identify by pictures. To be sure, that there is no influence by SW on my PC to the software 1.16 35470 I installed the complete TI Software on an other one. But here I get the same result.

I´m running the TAS5721EVM with 18V but I think this not the reason why the Board is not working.

Related to the issue that the PureOath software is not working as expected ( Mode switch do not change the block diagram ) I assume we have a Software or configuration issue here.

For my point of view the I2S should be possible to track using my logic analyser. I try to use BCLK as Clock, LRCLK as Word select and DIN as data. But on no one are signals. At the schematic I see, that the SDIN1-EVM is on pin 49 and connect to AIC3262. But at the detailed schematic I can´t see this connection.

Nevertheless: There is definitiv something wrong with the PurePath software and a possibble incompatibility between PurePath Motherboarf revision F and TAS5721EVM Revision A

    How to go on now??

    best regards
    Karsten

  • Hi Karsten,

Thank you for the update. We never heard of the issue about analog input on TAS5721 EVM + PPCMB before. If the boards can work with USB input source, it means that the device is configured correctly. But there is no output when switching to analog input mode, I think we could check the input source at first. Could you please check the I2S signal on the AMP input pins when analog input mode is enabled and USB input sourceis turned off? Please apply the analog input signal on AIN1 on the PPCMB.

When the boards are working with USB input, try to switching to analog input mode, is the sound output still there ot not? If it's still there, then the switch in the GUI is not working normally and it's a software issue. I'm using revision 1.16.35470 software on Win7 system, and there isn't any problem. Is there any security block or admin forbidden in your operation system and firewall? Besides, does 'Coax IN' mode work normally?

    Best regards,

    Shawn Zheng

  • Dear Shawn,

To be clear: My problem is that the TSA5721EVM board do not produce any sound. NOT the PurePath Motherboard.
The PurePath Motherboard is working fine with analog input and USB input. Everyting can be heard at the HP out. The mute and level AIC3262 displayed by the SW 1.16 35470 Software block grafic are working.

I´m running Windows 8.1. Again: Using the mode switch displayed at the TSA5721EVM block grafic has no effect!! So...Is there a software issue? How to switch the TAS5721 to the 2.1 Mode ????.

No sound at Headphone out on TSA5721EVM
To enable this the GPIO7 on PurePath must be set high, the analog output must be routed to VOUT1 and VOUT2 of PCM3168. How to set this using the PurePath Software?

    Best regards
    karsten

  • Hi Karsten,
About the headphone issue, I think the DR-SD pin should have been driven to High to enable the headphone channel by default. You could check the voltage on this pin to confirm this. In addition, please make sure the circuit for the headhone channel on the EVM is assembled(R1~R6, C1,C4...).
About the Mode 2.1 issue, I think this is a software issue, and we never heard of this issue before. Could you please try to re-install the software? We are using Win7 and Win10, and never find this issue. Could you please try with another operating system or different PC/ notebook?
BTW, there is no prolem in OUTA~OUTD output in 2.0 mode, right?
    Best regards,
    Shawn Zheng
  • Dear Shwan,

It becomes more clear now. The parts R1~R6,C1,C4... are NOT assembled. Only R3 is assembled! So there is a failure at the production of the EVM board!

And  yes, OUTA+ SC and OUTB+SC are working.

Concerning the Mode 2.1 issue, I will try a Windows 10 installation in the next day´s. We do not run this version at the moment so I need to organize an extra PC for this test. But let me say for my point of view this seemed not the root cause for the missing function. Maybe you have the chance to download the PurePath 1.16 by your own using the official external TI server to verify the integrity of the SW-package. At switching to Mode 2.1 I see "Executing Loding configuration" very shortly. The EVM Firmware Version is 354, the EVM FWID is "FWIDPUREPATH-CMBEVM-REVG"

    Regards
    Karsten

  • Hi Karsten,

Thank you for the update. I believe you found the root cause of the headphone issue.

About the GUI issue, the window 'Executing Loading configuration' that you see very shortly is actually expected. After that the bottom signal path should be enabled, as the red circles shwoing in the below figure.

Could you please show me the screen capture of the GUI after enabling 2.1 mode on your PC?

    Best regards,

    Shawn Zheng
