TAS5753MD: Master clock (MCLK) needed when used with I2S master ADC?

Part Number: TAS5753MD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1802

My design uses a PCM1802 I2S ADC to drive the TAS5753MD amplifier.  The ADC is able to act as the I2S master -- supplying the BitClk (SClk) for the TAS5753MD slave.  The datasheet suggests that the TAS5753MD is able to use its internal oscillator if MCLK is missing.  It also suggests an error recovery mode that uses that internal oscillator when external clocks are unstable.  Is the internal oscillator just for this error-recovery state, or can the part be used normally with an MCLK input?
