TPA3116D2: TPA3116 Power Ratings

Are the watt (W) ratings RMS or something other?

I ask because the Output power line just says "Output Power(W) 50"

Is this "W" RMS? If it's RMS then why does the PBTL line state "W(max) 100"?
The TPA3116 has 4 amps in it, 2x two BTL's, or stereo output, so is one TPA3116 a 2x50 package?

Hi Chuck,

you should also read the datasheet of TPA3116D2. In section 6.6 output power is specified for a 1kHz sine. So, the output power specification is RMS. The output power of 50W is valid for a 4R load in stereo configuration. The TPA3116D2 can drive 2 x 50W into 4R. The TPA3116D2 can also drive 100W into 2R mono, like shown in section 7.4.1 of datasheet (figure 36).

Hi Chuck,
I agree with Kai's explanation. In PBTL mode, a lower resistance speaker can be driven without triggering OC FAULT, because the output current is divided into two on the two channels. Please find more detailed explanaiton and info in section 7.4.1.

Hi Shawn,

The explanations for 2x50 BTL and 1x100 PBTL make sense. What's confusing is when the datasheet uses "max". Is that supposed to mean "max RMS", which is kinda an odd way to say it.

The datasheet should just say "all stated power is RMS", and "PBTL mode is 100w into 2ohm(min)" and "BTL mode (stereo) is 2x50w into 4ohm(min)"
