TLV9062: TLV9062 output current capability

Part Number: TLV9062

Hi,

I'm wondering if I can use the TLV9062 to drive a low impedance load safely. E.g. 120 ohms

The data sheet shows output short circuit current as +/- 50mA, absolute maximum ratings, continuous short circuit. Can I use these figures to safely assume that, with a +/- 5V power supply, I can safely drive a 120 ohm load?

The second related question is, can I configure two amplifiers in parallel (from the same package) in order to boost the drive current? An example from another design using NJM4556 amps is shown below. The series output resistor is very low - 1 ohm. Would there be any obvious concerns with this configuration?

Regards,

ac

  • Hi Andrew,

To determine if you'll able to safely drive 120 Ohms is going to depend on your circuit configuration and what type of output signal you're looking to achieve. Broadly speaking, you'll want to stay below the limits presented by the claw curve (Figure 10 in the datasheet), make sure you're within the output swing range, and keep the device within it's thermal limits as well depending on the power dissipated. Can you share your circuit configuration?

As for parallel op-amps, this is a tricky thing to get right and in general is not recommended. I would recommend reading this blog to get a few more details on this topic:

I hope that's clear, please let me know if you have further questions.

  • Hi Paul,
Many thanks for your feedback. I don't have a circuit diagram yet - I am still in "thought mode." However, based on your comments and those in the referenced thread, I will not use the TLV9062 for the output driver stage. Rather, I will look for a amplifier that is specifically designed for higher output current.
    Kind regards,
    AC
