OPA2356: Recommended current load pulse width when observing application performance with high current loads.

The datasheet contains a note stating that Continuous currents above 60mA are not recommended. This implies parameters in the table of electrical characteristics with currents greater than 60mA should only be observed with pulsed loading conditions in an application . What pulse width or pulse duration would be considered safe for parameters such as Voltage Output Swing, Output Current Continuous, Maximum output Peak Current and Short Circuit Current?

  • That continuous current in the absmax tables is very conservative CYA number driven by an electromigration concern on the metalization. Why anyone would set up and drive a continuous 60mA for decades is beyond me, with real signal processing the outputs are always moving so no concern I would think inside the operating parametrics.

    Thanks for the feedback. I understand that the 10mA continuous current specified in the absolute maximum ratings is a very conservative number but what is a safe pulse duration for other parameters specified in the table of electrical characteristics?

    Not sure how anyone can answer that

    1. A long duration pulse does shift the internal Tj which might effect lifetime

    2. As Tj shifts all parameters shift - is that a problem, usually not but you can tell better on parts that show over temp spec limits.

    Does TI have standard pulse width used for evaluating high current parameters for this type of device during production electrical test? If so, wouldn’t that pulse width be applicable to the datasheet parameters with high current conditions specified?
