TLV171: Output short circuit current and limit

Part Number: TLV171

Hi,

My query is regarding the short circuit current of TLV171 OPAM.

I am using TLV151 OPAM in single supply configuration ( Supply=15V). My output voltage is 0-10V.

1. In datasheet it is mentioned that output short circuit--> continuous.  if output is short circuited to GND or supply (15V) what is the maximum current OPAM can supplied/source and limited to internally.

2.  What is mean by continuous output short circuit does it can source/sink current with indefinite time ?

Regards,

Satish

  • Hello Satish,

    1. The output current of the TLV171 when shorted to ground is provided in the datasheet under the specification Short-Circuit Current (Isc). The datasheet states it can source 25mA and sink -35mA.

    2. The mention of continuous output short circuit current is provided in the Absolute Maximum Ratings table. This table is used to provide information on limitations to prevent from damaging the device. It does not mean that the specifications provided in the datasheet will be guaranteed under the absolute maximum rating conditions. So, the device can continuously have the output shorted without damaging the device.

  • Hi Tim,

    Thanks

So I understand from your answer that in shorted condition (to either GND or any supply less than 15V in my case ) it can source 25mA or sink 35mA continuously.

Also does this IC has internal current limiting which is restricted to 25mA/35mA current in shorted condition.

  • Hi Satish,

The short circuit current protection is accomplished using an internal current limiting circuit. Please see our TI Precision Lab videos on Input and Output Limitation - Part 3 for more information on the short circuit current protection circuitry.
