TLV4316-Q1: What the impact to the TLV4316-Q1 when the input common voltage is out of electrical characteristic?

Hi team,

We will use TLV4316-Q1 as voltage follower circuit. However, the system has a possibility that TLV4316-Q1 is applied out of common-mode voltage range. The system doesn't input beyond of absolute maximum rating,  but electrical characteristic might be violated.

In that case, could you tell me what the impact to the TLV4316-Q1 when the input common voltage is out of electrical characteristic? (ex. output inversion, etc, )

  • Hi Nishimuri-san,

    In a buffer configuration, the main issue when the input common mode voltage (Vcm) is violated (but doesn't go beyond the absolute maximum ratings), is the the output will be railed to the positive supply, when the upper Vcm is violated, and railed to the negative supply, when the lower Vcm is violated. This is due to the output swing limitation of the device. When this condition occurs the amplifier is no longer operating in a linear region. When in a buffer configuration, the output voltage is equal to the input voltage, therefore, the input can only swing from approximately V- to V+ without violating the output voltage swing specification.

    There will not be phase inversion because the device uses a complementary pair input stage. Please see "Op amps with complementary-pair input stages: What are the design trade-offs?" for more information.
