THS4551: Driving Strength

Part Number: THS4551
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THS4561

Hi

We are using THS4551 IC, The output is connected to the 5meter of cable . Is it able to drive the signal to 5meter of cable ?

Regards

Bala

  • It can if you isolate the capacitance with a matching resistor.

What speed is your signal, what is your final load, are you using Twinax?

  • Hi Michael,

Speed is very less as its input is derived from Hall sensor and cut off frequency of filter (-3db = 270KHz)

THS4551 amplifier output signals are transferred through the shielded differential cable of 5 meter length, not the Twinax also note its not a single cable length, one cable has 2 meter and other one has 3 meter)

ADC is the load, but we have a 2nd order Butterworth filter before the ADC.

I'm attaching the image of THS4551(unity gain), As of now we added 0 ohm series resistor, based on cable impedance series resistor values will be finalized, Can you please check and comment any additional components to be added due to long cable path

  • well you can't drive the cable directly as it looks capacitive, would need the ADC input filter ckt, eventually you need some series output R, an estimate of the cable C or it differential characteristic impedance. You can either do doubly terminated and take a 6dB loss, or treat the cable as a C and work that into your response simulation. You can recover the insertion loss with added gain in the FDA - why use such a fast part, it is very good noise for the power, but you might also look at the THS4561.
