Hi Sir,

My customer using INA216 as High-side current sensing monitor, and would like to ask for your advised for the following:

In application, the load current is 30uA~120mA, and the supply voltage is 5V.

  1. What is the selection criteria for shunt resistor?
  2. What is the formula to obtain the value of VOUT?

  • Hi Ian,

    the input bias current of INA216 is 3µA typical. This is only one tenth of your minimum measurement current. Unfortunately the datasheet does neither contain any data on the maximum input bias current, nor on the input bias current behaviour versus common mode input voltage and temperature. So even with an offset calibration in the micrcontroller software you might suffer from heavy measurement error at 30µA load current.

    I agree with Kia that you need to consider the IB of the device.  I would recommend the INA186 that has low input bias current.

    1. Video Training.

    2.  Normally it is (Load Current *Rshunt)* (INA_GAIN).  You would need to go through the errors that are possible and not calibrated out to see the error from that.  Here is training on some of the INA error sources.
