ISO124: floating input and output

Part Number: ISO124
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO224

I am using the ISO124 in a floating configuration. The input is referenced to Gnd 1 and the output is referenced to Gnd 2, but neither ground is referenced to chassis or real ground. Will this affect it's ability to isolate? Would it make the ISO124 more susceptible to noise?

  • Hi Joe!

Welcome to our e2e forum. Great question on the ISO 124! If this is a new design, I would like to direct you to the ISO224 as a newer, alternative solution. In either case, GND1 or GND2 does not have to be referenced to chassis or 'real ground' to maintain isolation. Chassis ground is usually referenced back to GND2 somewhere in the system, so you'll have to consider how the supplies and analog signal chain from the out put side are setup. Feel free to send along schematics and/or layout for us to review before you commit your board to copper if you like.
