I am planning to use DRV8840 as peltier controller of rating 12V,3A. Is this good option to go with DRV8840?

I CHOP is 5A, with Rsense = 100 mOhm, Vref = 2.475

What extra precautions should i take if i want to design using DRV8840?

Hi Vaibhav,

The DRV8412, DRV8432, or DRV8844 may be better options. The reason is the 100kHz max PWM input frequency.

If you want to try any of the devices, the DRV8840EVM, the DRV8412EVM and DRV8844EVM are available for experimentation. The DRV8432 is a higher current version of the DRV8412.

In my application, currently I was using L6203 IC ( Full Bridge Driver with max pulse current 5A and frequency 100 kHz max ), but above ic doesn't have OCP, short ckt in-built. So I come across DRV8840 with 5a current, 100kHz max.

How much impact it will have if i chose drv8840 with 100KHz max? Do you mean, it will not work at all?

Hi Vaibhav,

If the TEC worked at 100 kHz, the DRV8840 should also work. What is the minimum duty cycle that you plan to use?

I have GPIO limitation .. so , if I have to hardwire I0 to I4 pins,Can I do that? which is best way to do that but using current protection at the same time? ( All 0's or all 1's at I0 to I4 points )

Hi Vaibhav,

Yes you can hardwire the I0 to I4 pins. All 0's is not recommended as the current is effectively 0.

Please use Equation 1 and Table 2 to determine the desired current level. If you have room on your PCB, please consider placing a footprint for a resistor to 3.3V and GND. You can then populate the appropriate resistor after debug.

Which are the PWM pins mentioned in datasheet?

Datasheet Quote :

" The DRV8840 device contains one H-bridge motor driver with current-control PWM circuitry. A block diagram of the motor control circuitry is shown in Figure 5 "

And secondly please tell me whether this IC is suitable for peltier ON-OFF control ? ( Heating application Set point : 25, 30, 37 Degree Celsius )

Hi Vaibhav,

The PHASE and ENBL pins are used to control the PWM. Typically, the PHASE pin is set for the current direction and ENBL pin is PWM'ed.

We are not familiar with the requirements of peltier ON-OFF control. Have you compared the requirements of peltier ON-OFF with the abilities of the device? If there are any differences or concerns, we can address them.

The DRV8840 can control this device. The best approach evaluate the performance with a DRV8840EVM.
