CC3220: Programming using Uniflash

Hi,

How can we use UniFlash 4 to program a CC3220 over the serial interface using an existing hardware platform (i.e. without using a modified, wire-strapped Launchpad)?

Our situation is that we have existing hardware using CC3200 and want to simply replace the processor with a CC3220. Our process is to use the serial programming mode in UniFlash connected through an on-board FTDI USB-serial converter and a manual reset switch on platform. This works absolutely fine with UniFlash 3 and CC3200 because UniFlash prompts for a reset. However with CC3220 and Uniflash 4 it would appear that it is expected that the reset of the processor is somehow automated!

We have connected the hardware in exactly the same way and in UniFlash 4 selected 'CC3120/CC3220 [serial]' at the bottom of the device list but when we click connect we get 'Operation Failed: Unhandled exception: Auto detect failure'. Out of interest what is UniFlash trying to detect to 'Auto detect', if this is something on the Launchpad then how can we ever program using our own platform?

FYI, there are some slight changes in the schematic between the CC3200 and CC3220. see migration tab of attached document

Hi Charles,

Thanks for your response. I can confirm I am following the steps given in the ImageCreator and Programming Tool User Guide but when I click 'connect' as shown in section 5.4 I get 'Operation Failed: Unhandled exception: Auto detect failure'.

I am using boot mode UARTLOAD (SOP2 pulled-up) and resetting the CC3220SF (toggling RESET low) before clicking connect but can't get it to connect.

Looking at a some other posts on the forum the suggestion seems to be that only wiring from the Launchpad to the UART will work. Surely this isn't the case, how are we expected to achieve this in a production environment. Even if this was realistic our existing hardware doesn't expose the UART lines directly because we use an on-board USB-UART converter.

Update..

OK so it seems that their may be a way to program CC3220SF without using the Launchpad. Using the cmd line interface (dslite.bat) and specifying the optional --port parameter I've been able to connect to the hardware because it allows for the manual resetting of the mcu.

Using the command:

dslite.bat --mode cc3220 project program --name PROJECT_NAME --port COM_NUM

This connects and starts programming the image however it gets to 99% and then I get an fs_programming error: -FS_ERR_FILE_NOT_EXSITS

Anyone got any ideas what may be causing this?

Hi Charles,

I managed to flash the CC3220SF using the command interface as previously mentioned. I believe the error I was seeing was related to the certificate files I was loading into the project.

With regard to the hardware migration info, everything on our current hardware design will be fine to migrate to the CC3220SF except possibly the Flash DC-DC rail.

The first point in the spreadsheet states: 'In case of CC3220SF, the flash DC-DC can be used for powering the flash. This requires a 10uH inductor and 10uF capacitor'

Is this referring to a 10uH inductor between pins 45 and 46, L3 as shown in the typical application schematic?
If so is this optional, can the CC3220SF be used without this inductor?

Hi,

The inductor is not optional for the CC3220SF. It is DNP for CC3220S and CC3220R
