Linux/PROCESSOR-SDK-AM335X: Kernel crash

Hi,

I am working with beaglebone black customized board. SD card booting linux TI-SDK Kernel version 4.9(SDK v04_02_00_09) working fine with custom board. While booting with TI-SDK linux kernel 4.4 not working (SDK v03.03.00.04) , got kernel panic. But both the kernel version's are working with beaglebone black board. What could be the issue? Kindly guide me.

Attached the kernel panic log. What would cause this issue ?

More over I wrote EEPROM data to my customized board. Can we get any kernel error if EEPROM contents are not correct ?

Is this issue could be HW or SW ?

  • Hi Thalapushpam,

    There are many changes between TI SDK kernel 4.4 and 4.9. If the system works properly with the last SW release just use it.
    About the errors and crash in the attached log:
    The message:
    tda998x 0-0070: set_page 0001 err -121
    is caused by unsuccessful attempt for i2c transfer in tda998x_drv.c.
    But the crash is caused by failed binding to DRM device recognized as Generic AM33XX.

    Thanks.I do not think the kernel panic happens because of the error message,

    I have tried custom board with TI-SDK kernel 4.9 & 4.4 prebuild kernal images. I received the same error message while booting in both kernel version. But kernel version 4.4 only got kernel panic.I have attached both kernel log files for your reference.

    TI-SDK kernel 4.9, modem not working. It is working in TI-SDK kernel 4.4. So I would like to use TI-SDK kernel 4.4 instead of 4.9.

    Is it EEPROM have any kernal specific data? Can we get any kernel error if EEPROM contents are not correct ?

    The EEPROM you are asking about is this the board ID that is on the TI EVMs? Did you add this EEPROM to your custom board design?

    Since one kernel boots to a prompt I don't think the EEPROM is affecting you here. U-Boot will need to modified to not use an EEPROM for a custom board typically. I am fairly certain on the AM335x there is not information the kernel will need that is stored in the EEPROM. The panics look to be happening during kernel initialization.

    The first thing I would consider reviewing since you are booting across two different kernels are you using the same DTB file for each kernel?

    Also could you please explain more about the modem not working on the later kernel?

    Yes, I have added the board ID and name to EEPROM, so I can boot the uboot.

    We are using USB based Sierra LTE + GPS modem with AM3359 chipset, and we installed the sierra wireless driver (GobiNet & GobiSerial) along with 'usbserial' & 'usbnet' drivers, we got the 'eth1' & 'eth2' nodes in 'ifconfig' but not able to get the IP address assigned on 'eth1', in kernel4.9, but we are able to see the IP address using AT commands in '/dev/ttyUSB2' which serial port is used to interact with modem.

    We are able to get the IP address in 'eth1' if we use kernel 4.4.

    I suspected the TILCD driver, so I have disabled the TILCD driver, now we are able to boot without any issues.

    Can you please tell me what could be the problem with TILCD for this kernel panic on my custom board ? but why the same kernel didn't occur in my beaglebone black.

    BTW, I have used the BBB board as reference for our custom board design.

    Actually myself & Thalapushbam working on this.

    As per the kernel panic logs, we suspected the TILCD driver, we were able to solve the kernel panic issue once we disabled the TILCD DRM driver (Graphics) using make menuconfig.

    What could be the reason for this ?

    Why its worked with kernelv4.9 and panic in kernelv4.4 ? Any major changes in the driver, BTW, I have not looked into details this yet.

    Can you please help us to understand the root cause for it ?

    Also we want to enable the TILCD driver in future, so we need fix as well.

    I thought of trying to use the TILCDdriver from kernelv4.9 to kernelv4.4, not sure when I will have time to do this, but now we need to understand the root cause.

    There are some fixes done on parsing of DT properties in 4.9 kernel. Please study the tilcdc driver patches on 4.9 and apply them to your linux 4.4 code. You may also want to study the dts file changes for tilcdc between the two versions and apply them to your code.
