TLV320AIC3110: Audio Codec that supports Speaker and Headset

Part Number: TLV320AIC3110
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3A225E

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Our customer is planning to use TLV320AIC3110 Audio Codec IC for one of their Products.
The Product is a Smartphone which has both Speaker and Headset option.

They have below listed queries regarding using TLV320AIC3110 Audio Codec:
1. What type of Headsets does this Codec support? OMTP/CTIA
2. Is there any internal switching option for selection between OMTP and CTIA Headset?
3. Does the TLV320AIC3110 Audio Codec support Headset Button press Detection (Audio Control through Headset Button press)

Also if you can provide details of any other suggested Audio Codec part for their Application is highly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Art

  • Hi Art,

Please see my responses below in red:

    1. What type of Headsets does this Codec support? OMTP/CTIA

    1. The device supports either configuration bot not both concurrently. There is no internal detection for OMTP/CTIA and the external circuitry needs to be configured for either one.

    2. Is there any internal switching option for selection between OMTP and CTIA Headset?

    2. This was answered above but to reiterate, no there is no internal OMTP/CTIA detection. If OMTP/CTIA detection is needed, the customer will need to incorporate this detection externally with a device like the TS3A225E.

    3. Does the TLV320AIC3110 Audio Codec support Headset Button press Detection (Audio Control through Headset Button press)

    3. Yes, the AIC3110 supports button press detection.

For other device recommendations, the AIC31xx family is going to be the way to go. This family includes the AIC3100, AIC3110, AIC3111 and AIC3120. The AIC3111 and AIC3120 both have programmable miniDSPs capable of some algorithm implementation. A full stereo CODEC option would be the AIC3007/AIC3107.

  • Hello Aaron,

Customer was thankful for the response.

With Respect to the Audio Codec, they require few more features for their application:
    1. The Codec must support 2 no.s of Digital MEMS microphone (PDM).
    2. The Codec must support Speaker and Receiver.
    3. The Codec must support Headset and must be able to detect Headset Button press (Audio Control through Headset Button press)

Do you have any Audio Codec part you can suggest to the customer?

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hi Art,

The big requirement is going to be the stereo digital mic support. The only CODEC that is going to support stereo digital mics and have an integrated class-d amplifier is going to be the AIC3262/3268 family. The CODEC's I mentioned above only support a single digital microphone.

The AIC326x family feature our more advanced CODECs. They have a stronger programmable miniDSP vs the AIC31xx family and have multiple audio interfaces.

If the customer is open to using an external audio amplifier, then the AIC3106 may be a good choice.
