TPA3116D2: Looking for a drop in replacement. Can the TPA3116D2-Q1 be used as a repllacement for the TPA3116D2DAD?

Part Number: TPA3116D2

Since the TPA3116D2DAD currently has no availability, I need to find to replacement and prefer a drop-in replacement, if at all possible.  It appears that the TPA3116D2-Q1 (automotive) part is the most likely candidate, but there are the following concerns when comparing the specifications of these parts.

Thermal Performance.  The TPA3116D2-Q1 Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance numbers are much higher than the TPA3116D2DAD part (44.7 °C/W vs 22 °C/W).  It looks like this is due to the fact that  the numbers on the -Q1 part are specified with a much smaller heatsink; the -Q1 part is specified with a 15-mm × 15-mm × 2-mm copper heat slug heat sink and the TPA3116D2DAD is 14mm wide, 50mm long, & 25mm high. So, this may be fine, however according the mechanical diagram in the spec sheet, the -Q1 thermal pad is smaller --the TPA3116D2-Q1 pad size is 3.04x3.74mm(max) and the TPA3116D2DAD pad size is 4.11x4.36mm (max).  Is this a concern for use as a replacement, and why is the thermal pad smaller on a part that is designed to be used over a wider temperature range?

Gain (BTL) and Gain(SLV) specification.  On the TPA3116D2-Q1, the Gain(BTL) and Gain(SLV) numbers are specified at different resistor values than the TPA3116D2DAD.  In fact, the resistor values in the -Q1 spec are undefined values according to “Table 1. Gain and Master or Slave”. For example, Table 1 shows that for MASTER mode with a Gain of 20dB, R1 should be 5.6k Ohms, and R2 should be OPEN, however in the DC Electrical Characteristics, a Typical Gain of 20dB shows R1 = OPEN and R2 = 20k Ohms.  This discrepancy does not appear in the TPA3116D2DAD spec sheet.   When using the TPA3116D2-Q1, which values should be used for a gain of 20dB? Is this a concern for replacing the TPA3116D2DAD with the TPA3116D2-Q1?

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

  • Douglas,

(1)From TI EVM evaluation result, both the thermal pad size can meet output power requirement, so there is not special consideration on this except the package qualified for automotive grade.  In your replacement, i am not sure this smaller size thermal will trigger addtional thermal evaluaition, maybe you can do a thermal simulation to estimate how much thermal performance impacted by this.

(2)These two device use the same configuration of gain setting. Table 1 value shows correlated between two devices.   I can't answer why 20K is used on electrical table, while i can say this 20K also works for the 20dB gain.

Hope this information helps your replacement.
